Icy conditions force continued closings of schools, government offices

As the winter storm grips the Midlands, schools, government offices and other services and attractions will remain closed Thursday.

Schools

All Lexington County School Districts (1, 2, 3, 4 and Lexington-Richland 5) will be closed for students and staff on Thursday. Each school district will communicate specific details to parents using automated telephone notification systems.

All after-school programs, athletic practices or events, adult education classes, other school or district-related meetings, events or extra-curricular activities scheduled for after school or evening are also canceled.

All Richland County School Districts (1 and 2) and administrative offices will be closed Thursday. This includes all athletic and school or district-related meetings and activities.

Private schools including Ben Lippen School, Covenant Christian School and St. Peter’s Catholic School also will be closed Thursday. St. Joseph Catholic School and St. John Neuman Catholic school will be closed Thursday for the weather and will begin break for President’s Day starting Friday through Monday. Hammond School announced is currently on break for the holiday as well and will remain closed Thursday through Monday. Classes for St. Joseph, St. John Neuman and Hammond students will resume Tuesday.

Colleges and universities

The University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus will remain closed Thursday. USC offices will be closed and all classes canceled.

Benedict College has canceled classes and closed its main offices for Thursday.

Columbia College has canceled all classes, offices and campus activities for Thursday. Residence halls will remain open, and the dining hall will operate during normal hours with breakfast starting at 7:30 am. The Terrace Café will be closed.

All Midlands Technical College campuses, including Airport, Batesburg-Leesville, Beltline, Fairfield, Harbison, Northeast and the Fort Jackson Center, will be closed Thursday.

Government Offices

The town of Lexington offices will remain closed Thursday. Municipal court has been rescheduled for Tuesday.

Richland County and Lexington County government offices will close except for essential operations. Richland County curbside garbage collection has been suspended for Thursday.

Cayce City Hall will be closed Thursday as well. Municipal court is canceled, and all parks are closed. Thursday trash customers will have their garbage picked up on Friday.

City of West Columbia offices are remaining closed Thursday, too.

Military

Fort Jackson will be closed Thursday though officials expect key and essential personnel to report. The closing includes all DoDEA schools. The Lee Road Child Development Center will be open at 4 a.m. only for key and essential personnel.

The Moncrief Army Community Hospital will be closed Thursday. The Urgent Care Clinic also will be closed Thursday. Patients are urged to call the appointment line once the clinic re-opens to rebook appointments.

Gate One on Jackson Boulevard and Gate Five on Leesburg Road will be closed Thursday. Gate Two on Forest Drive will be open 24 hours. Gate Four on Percival Road will be open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Attractions and services

The Columbia Metropolitan Airport reports that several incoming and outgoing flights have been canceled for Wednesday. Officials have not determined whether flights will be canceled Thursday. They encourage all passengers to check their airline websites for any delays or cancellations.

The South Carolina State Museum and Richland and Lexington County libraries also will be closed Thursday.
