A burglary suspect ran over his accomplice and then tried to run over Richland County Sheriff’s deputies before being killed Friday morning, according to authorities.

Deputies patrolling Two Notch Road around 3:30 a.m. said they saw two men trying to break into Columbia Powersports near Arcadia Lakes Drive.

As they approached the men to question them, the deputies said one suspect tried to drive off in a truck and, in the process, ran over the other suspect.

Deputies said the man then drove toward them, hitting a patrol car. They responded by firing shots at the truck.

The suspect was hit by the deputies’ fire but drove about a mile before crashing into a building near Columbia Place Mall. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death for the suspect, whose name will not be released until authorities can notify his family.

His alleged accomplice, James Branch, is listed in critical condition in an area hospital.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating as is standard procedure when deputies are involved in a shooting.
